Single-vehicle wreck Wednesday kills Athens woman

By Lawson Smith Anchor/Reporter

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department is investigating a fatal Wednesday crash.

The department said in a Facebook post Thursday officers responded to a single-vehicle accident in the area of Danielsville Rd. and Harve Mathis Rd. just after 4 p.m.

An initial investigation determined the driver of a 2003 Chevrolet TrailBlazer, driven by a 33-year-old Athens woman was traveling along Danielsville Rd. when she encountered a patch of ice on the roadway. The vehicle then left the roadway and struck a tree.

Medical response was called to render aid, but the unnamed woman succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident is the third wreck in the area that resulted in a fatality in 2025, according to the post.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to contact Officer First Class Bridget Teskey at [email protected] or 762-400-7022.
