Original Story: A Jackson County Sheriff's Office Deputy is hospitalized and a woman who reportedly fired a weapon at law enforcement is dead, according to information released Saturday morning by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said the deputy is hospitalized with critical injuries.
Miles said the shooting happened Friday, Nov. 5 around 9:20 p.m. when deputies were called to a domestic disturbance at a residence on Ga Highway 124 in Hoschton.
"The call was about a domestic situation where the homeowners wanted a non-resident out of the home," Miles said in a prepared statement. "When deputies arrived at that location, they made contact with a woman at the front door of the residence. The woman pulled out a firearm and pointed it towards the deputies. The deputies gave verbal commands for the woman to drop the weapon."
Miles said the woman opened fire on the deputies, striking one of them.
"The other deputy returned fire, hitting the woman and killing her," Miles said. "The injured deputy was taken to a local trauma center where she remains in critical condition."
The name of the injured deputy has not been made public.
Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum posted a brief statement on the JCSO Facebook page about the incident, outlining some of the same details provided by the GBI.
"Please be in prayer for our injured Deputy, the family, along with all the shift and coworkers of the Jackson County Sheriff's Office," Mangum wrote in the post.
