Man accused of robbing Gainesville pawn shop apprehended shortly after incident

A Gainesville man has been arrested after he allegedly snatched a gold necklace from an employee at a local pawn shop.

Robert Boyd, 39, reportedly acted as if he was a customer at Cash America Pawn on Saturday, but then grabbed the necklace an employee was showing him and took off on foot, according to Gainesville Police Corporal Jessica Van.

"Immediately after that, the employee called 911, provided plenty of information - description, direction of travel," said Van. "This put officers in the right place at the right time and one of our officers got out with the person matching the description at Pearl Nix Parkway and Jones Street."

Van said officers surrounded the area and started looking for the subject, and one officer spotted him.

"He saw, visually, saw Boyd attempting to hide in a trash can," said Van. "At this point, the officer started giving verbal commands, telling him to stop where he's at, get down, and that's when Boyd was actually secured."

The necklace was on Boyd's person when they apprehended him, Van said, and once they ran his information, saw he had an outstanding warrant in Hall County.

The necklace was valued at over $2,000. Van said the shop employee did an excellent job relaying information to dispatch, who in turn gave the information to police officers, aiding in the suspect's capture.
