By Lauren Hunter Multimedia Journalist

The Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic Unit for the Hall County Sheriff’s Office and Gainesville Police Department has been awarded a 2021 grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.

The grant totals $66,471.89; this year marks the fifth that the HEAT Unit has received this grant, according to a release from the Sheriff’s Office.

Money from the grant will go toward creating strategies to limit the number of local traffic accidents in Gainesville/Hall County from aggressive driving.

HEAT Units work to combat accidents, injuries and deaths from impaired driving and speeding, as well as educate the public on driving safety and the dangers of DUI.

The Hall County/Gainesville HEAT Unit also works with the GOHS to conduct road checks and sobriety checkpoints as partners in the Operation Zero Tolerance DUI and Click It or Ticket seatbelt campaigns.

More information on the HEAT Units is on the GOHS website.
