Report of hostage situation leads to short standoff, school lockdown

By Will Daughtry News Reporter

A call about a possible hostage situation and gunshots on Dogwood Drive near Mountain View Road in Hall County on Monday turned into a short standoff outside of a home.

A 63-year-old woman was the caller and was reportedly talking to deputies on the phone from a neighbor’s house.

She reported a possible hostage situation involving a 40-year-old male family member and an unknown man, both with firearms. She also reported hearing a gunshot.

Due to the nature of the call, deputies and Gainesville Police officers surrounded the residence.

They blocked Dogwood Drive and Lyman Hall Elementary School was placed on an external lockdown.

Deputies flew a drone through an open doorway of the home and confirmed that the caller’s male family member was inside. The man was repeatedly asked to come out peacefully and spoke with the caller, whose story reportedly varied and changed.

After 10 minutes of commands given over the intercom, the woman’s family member came out with a handgun, placing the firearm on the ground and surrendering peacefully.

Safety checks were performed on the home, but no one else was found.

Deputies met with both individuals and a Georgia Crisis and Access Line clinician who was on the scene as well. Both the caller and the family member were transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
