Gaining the Edge: White County's Haynes becoming a dual threat

By Bo Wilson | Video by Seth Chapman

CLEVELAND — J Ben Haynes has made it his mission to become a dual-threat at quarterback this season.

White County's junior field general has passed for 902 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for another 380 yards and nine touchdowns this season.

Those stats average out to be 225 yards per game passing and 95 rushing yards.

White County coach Tim Cokely is pleased with the progress of his quarterback.

“My quarterback’s a real competitor, and when your quarterbacks tough, your whole team is tough," Cokely said after Friday night's win over North Hall. "J. Ben plays with a lot of heart.”

Haynes has been a three-year starter for the Warriors at quarterback. However, the Warriors haven't asked him to use his legs much, but all that has changed this season.

"I've always wanted to be a dual-threat quarter," he said. "The past couple of years we've had some great runners, so I really didn't have to use my legs much. I feel like I've gotten a lot better in the offseason. Coach tells me if anything breaks down, to just take off. It's worked well, so far, this year."
