Natural gas users may see a bill increase next year

By Joy Holmes Multimedia Journalist

Atlanta Gas Light requested a $96 million rate increase from the Georgia Public Service Commission to retain system safety and reliability.

The multi million dollar request would go in effect January 1 if granted by the PSC. A hearing will be held at the end of 2019 to determine whether the grant is necessary.

"Ultimately the commission will decide if the rate increase is needed," PSC spokesman, Tom Krause, said. "Maybe they need less of an increase, or they don't need an increase at all," he said.

Given the grant is approved, gas users can expect to see an average increase of $3.80 to their bills. This additional charge will apply to all gas users, Krause said.

"Atlanta Gas Light is the pipeline provider of gas to your local marketing companies," Krause said. "so, whoever you get a bill from for your natural gas,  they're actually getting it from Atlanta Gas Light."

According to Krause, the $96 million request is the largest dollar amount the commission can remember recieving.
