Gas prices are edging upward in some parts of North Georgia this week

By Steve Winslow Anchor/Reporter

The snow fall count in parts of northern Georgia from the weekend are mirroring the increase in gas prices for the state's commuters this week.

While portions of the area received about 3 inches of snow from Winter Storm Cora last Friday, AAA of Georgia says that Monday's state average for unleaded gasoline is up is 3 cents from a week ago, 1 cent more than a month ago, and 1 cent less than last year. Commuters should see a price averaging $2.93 per gallon (rates subject to change), according to AAA's Montrae Waiters.

“This month, oil prices increased unexpectedly due to speculation that China's demand would surge, which likely contributed to an uptick in gas prices across the U.S.", according to Waiters. "Unpredictable global moves and threats of extreme weather could cause gas prices to ebb and flow for the coming weeks."

Drivers in Hall County could be seeing average prices for unleaded regular gas at around $2.92, just below the state's average.  The highest average in northeastern Georgia can be found in Banks County (as of Monday), at exactly $3 per gallon.  The lowest average price?  That's split between Elbert and Rabun Counties, at $2.75 per gallon.

Across the country, drivers are experiencing an average price per gallon at about $3.06 per gallon, unchanged from one week ago, mainly due to an increase in crude oil production.
