Weekend fire destroys Lake Rabun home

Rabun and Habersham County firefighters spent about five hours early Saturday battling a house fire on the back side of Lake Rabun.

The home, located on Hartwell Lane, was dispatched at 4:18 a.m. April 20, according to information released Monday.

“Dispatch advised that the caller stated heavy fire was visible,” said Rabun County Assistant Fire Chief Justin Upchurch. “Stations 4, 7 and 12 were dispatched initially.”

Due to the location of the fire, Habersham County Station 17 was requested and responded along with Lee Arrendale State Prison Fire Department from Alto.

“The first fire units on scene advised that the house had already collapsed into the basement and that they were protecting a detached garage on the property,” Upchurch said.

Firefighters remained on scene until about 9:20 a.m.

The cause of the fire is undetermined as of Monday.
