Barrow County EMS will continue ambulance services for the county

Barrow County Emergency Management Service will continue to offer ambulance services countywide following a decision from the Department of Public Health Wednesday.

Commissioner Dr. Patrick O'Neal rescinded his decision to open up the Barrow EMS zone to bid by outside vendors in a letter sent to the Region 10 EMS Council. The decision is effective immediately.

“We think this is the best decision for Barrow County, both in the level of service provided and in the best interest of the taxpayers’ dollar," said County Manager Mike Renshaw in a press release. "BCES has provided high-quality Emergency Medical Services to Barrow County for over 40 years, and is committed to continuing to maintain the highest standard of care for many years to come.”

Barrow County EMS ambulance services cover all of the county, including the city of Winder. According to a January 28, 2019 press release from the county, O'Neal rejected the findings on the Northeast Georgia Region 10 EMS Council, which was investigating a request from the City of Winder for their own ambulance service. The release states he also requested the council open all of the Barrow County EMS zone and accept proposals from Barrow County, the City of Winder and any other ambulance provider.

The council was to accept proposals and make a written recommendation by March 19, 2019.
