Playoff Softball: East Hall, Buford fight to stay alive; Lumpkin, Jefferson eliminated

COLUMBUS — Jefferson and Lumpkin County were eliminated in the Class 3A tournament Friday at the Olympic Softball Complex.

The Lady Dragons, who were state runners-up in 2018, fell 10-7 to Calhoun in the elimination bracket. Lumpkin County dropped a 10-0 decision to Ringgold.

Meanwhile, East Hall will take on Ringgold at 6 p.m. trying to stay alive in the Class 3A tournament. The Lady Vikings lost 2-1 to Lovett in the quarterfinals earlier on Friday.

Banks County in Class 2A and Commerce in Class A Public will play at 8 p.m. looking to advance to the championship series in their classifications.

Lovett capitalized on two errors in the third inning and held on to beat East Hall in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A state tournament on Friday morning at the Columbus Softball Complex.

The two unearned runs were enough to set the pace for the Lions. 

The Vikings out hit Lovett 8-2 and left seven on base in the double-elimination tournament.

Macy Banks went the distance for the Vikings in a stellar performance, allowing only two hits, no earned runs, no walks and six strikeouts. Banks was also perfect in the batter's with a 3-for-3 performance and hammered a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. 

East Hall had the winning runs on first and third in the seventh with two outs but couldn't get them across the plate.

Buford also will be playing at 6 p.m. in the Class 5A tournament looking to stay alive against Carrollton. The Lady Wolves fell 5-3 to Jones County in the quarterfinals.

 

GHSA SOFTBALL QUARTERFINALS

Jones County 5, Buford 3 - Jones County smashed a grand slam in the sixth inning that led to the win over Buford in the quarterfinals of the Class 5A state tournament Friday morning.

Buford led 3-1 until the Jones' home run. 

Buford will play the winner of the Carrollton/Starr's Mill game at 6 p.m. tonight.

 

Banks County 8, Lamar County 0 - Banks County rocked Lamar County for eight runs in the shutout win Friday morning.
