Charging stations installed at Young Harris College

Young Harris College has installed three electric car charging stations on the campus.

The charging stations are 220-volt, 30 amp and can charge an electric vehicle up to six times fast than charging from a standard wall outlet, a release from the college states, and are compatible with ever electric car, including a Tesla with the use of the standard adapter. They are located in the parking lot of the athletic department building on Sunset Drive.

The college believes the stations will attract environmentally conscious students and said the switchboard estimated the college gets one call a week about electric car charging on campus. However the charging stations are not limited to student use. The college said the stations would attract visitors to the campus, as driving uphill in the mountains can drain an electric car's battery and other reliable charging stations are difficult to locate.

“The charging stations are located in a beautiful part of campus near a creek and green space,” said Hollis Townsend, director of technology support and operations at Young Harris. “While charging, you can visit Cupid Falls, a YHC athletic event, or the Rollins Campus Center, which has dining options like Chick-fil-A and Starbucks."

The initiative was paid for the the Student Government Association Green Fee. Students voted to contribute $5 per student per semester to fund various green projects, with the college matching the funds. The charging stations are currently funded for two years.

The college has taken other steps to be more environmentally conscious. Read about their efforts here.
