Sheriff: FBI, GBI investigating bomb threat 'hoax' in Towns County

Towns County Sheriff Chris Clinton said no one was injured and nothing was found during a search of the Towns County Recreation Center following a bomb threat received Thursday afternoon.

“The bomb threat was received by a county employee at a Towns County Recreation Department email address,” Clinton said. “The building was evacuated and secured upon the first responders’ arrival. A bomb [detection] K-9 was requested from a nearby law enforcement agency to assist in the search of the building.”

Clinton said Towns County Sheriff’s Office personnel learned from the Georgia Emergency Management Agency that numerous emailed bomb threats similar to the one Thursday have been received throughout Georgia.

A copy of the emailed bomb threat was provided to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for follow-up investigation.

“While we take all threats seriously, there is no risk to Towns County citizens,” Clinton said. “This is part of a nationwide hoax. We have informed and are working closely with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation.”
