Lightning is suspected cause of Buford house fire

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

Gwinnett County fire officials say lightning is believed to be the cause of a house fire in Buford Saturday afternoon.

According to a release from the county fire department, a neighbor called officials to the home on Emerald Lake Lane just before 3:30. When crews arrived they found smoke and fire coming from the home's second floor.

According to the release, it took crews just under an hour to put out the blaze, which caused serious damage to the second story and attic of the home.

No one was injured and the American Red Cross was contacted to help the family of four, who were displaced by the fire.

Fire officials warn others to stay alert during inclement weather and unplug electronics if lightning is a threat.
