Gwinnett County offers free adoption for barn cats

30 cats and kittens are free to a good home in Gwinnett County, but the catch is they're best as outside pets.

The Gwinnett County Animal Welfare and Planned Pethood of Duluth are working together to find homes for "un-adoptable" cats that work best as barn cats.

"We're lucky to be working with Planned Pethood. They take in our unadoptable or un-socialized cats, spay or neuter them, give them rabies vaccines and then place them as barn cats," said Shelter Assistant Manager Cindy Wiemann. "It allows the cats to find a home where they will be happy and not have the contact with humans that they really don't appreciate anyway."

Barn cats can even be put to work as organic pest control for your property.

"Cats provide free, organic pest control for barns and stables," Wiemann said. "It works really great for the cats - they get to live their lives how they've always been living, which is on their own anyway - and without poisons that could harm people, pets or children."

Planned Pethood found homes for 150 feral and un-socialized cats in 2015, and so far has found homes for 81 cats this year.

The cats are spayed or neutered and up to date on rabies shots. Once they get to their new home, the shelter recommends the cats are kept confined for about 2 weeks to acclimate before getting outdoor freedom.

If you're looking for an indoor cat or dog, Gwinnett County Animal Shelter is currently running an adoption special until the end of July: cats for $10 and dogs for $30.
