Tractor-trailer driver charged with DUI in fatal NW Ga. accident

By The Associated Press

EMERSON, Ga. — Authorities say a woman is dead after a tractor-trailer stopped beside a northwest Georgia highway rolled downhill away from its driver and collided with a pickup.

The crash happened Thursday night in Bartow County. Police say emergency crews worked two hours to free a man, toddler and infant trapped inside the truck. A woman traveling with them was killed.

Emerson Police Chief Stan Bradley said a tractor-trailer driver had pulled over on Joe Frank Harris Parkway and was conducting a safety inspection when the big truck rolled away from him. Bradely said it's likely the rig's parking brake either failed or was never engaged.

Police say the truck driver, whose name was not immediately released, was charged with drunken driving. The woman killed in the crash was not immediately identified.
