ATLANTA — The fuss over the water in the Appalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin, which includes the water in Lake Lanier, has gone on for 25 years now, but it appears Georgia has made a step toward resolving the issue.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported Tuesday that Georgia officials have asked for a mediator to step in to help find a resolution to sharing the water in the river basin. The newspaper said the request was made in court documents filed last week.
An attorney appointed a year ago as special master by the U.S. Supreme Court to resolve the dispute told the AJC he was glad to see the words "settlement" and "mediator" in the court documents.
Gov.Nathan Deal of Georgia and Gov. Rick Scott of Florida met in June to try to hammer out a solution with no luck.
Scott said Georgia continues to pulls too much water out of the river basin for consumption, which damages the fishing industry in his state. Deal has said the metro Atlanta area needs the water for consumption.
There is no word on when a mediator might get to work on the problem.
