Okefenokee swamp fire still burning despite rain

FOLKSTON - Officials at the Okefenokee Swamp say the swamp's Honey Prairie Fire remains active despite some rain and cooler conditions.

Byron Haire, a fire information officer for the Georgia Forestry Commission, said Sunday an incident response team was monitoring about 130 acres of active flames just north of Billys Island, the northernmost reach of the fire so far.

Haire said the fire was being watched from the air but there were no plans to attack it with water unless the flames flared up.

Elsewhere in the swamp, Haire says the fire has retained its heat in a lot of areas but is only smoldering.

The fire information office says the fire was measured in a surveillance flight Sunday at 128,866 acres.
