Collins blasts board of regents

GAINESVILLE - A Gainesville state lawmaker says University System Chancellor Errol Davis' speculations on massive tuition increases for Georgia college students amounts to nothing more than scare tactics.

"To simply say 'we are too valuable to get cut' is not a very good answer," State Rep. Doug Collins said on WDUN'S The Local Hour Friday.

University System Chancellor Errol Davis announced earlier this week tuition hikes of as much as 77 percent would be necessary to absorb state cuts to the higher ed budget.

Collins said all state agencies are taking tough steps to balance their budgets and he doesn't like the idea that the state Board of Regents is trying to sidestep those cuts. He added the regents need to understand that colleges and universities will have to streamline operations just as other state agencies are doing in light of dwindling revenues.

"The regents are wanting to get by without taking issue with cuts and they're wanting to balance on the students, the Georgia students," Collins said.
