GAINESVILLE - A star grocery bagger at the J&J Foods on Limestone Parkway will compete in Florida this summer.
Tiffany Smith, 19, a sophomore at Gainesville State College, will head down to Sandestin, Florida in July to compete with baggers from other grocery stores in Georgia.
"They do it for who is the fastest and most efficient, with the least amount of bags, in paper and plastic," she explained. "You just want to make sure, of course, your eggs and bread are on top, that it is square for the paper bags, and nothing's going to fall out or anything like that, and that your weight is consistent."
Smith prefers bagging with plastic because she can do it faster, but said she is training for both, "Trying to work on speed, and make sure the bags are square, make sure everything is just right."
If she wins the event in Florida, Smith will head to Las Vegas for the national competition.
In addition to being a champion grocery bagger, Smith is currently studying health and physical education at GSC, and plans to also take business management classes. She grew up in Gainesville and has been working at J&J for almost two years.
"It's a great place to work and meet good people every day," she said.
