TOCCOA - A drug suspect was shot in Toccoa Wednesday after he allegedly tried to run over one of the officers attempting to arrest him in an incident similar to what happened in Gainesville last week.
It happened late Wednesday afternoon on Stephens Drive.
Toccoa Police Chief Jackie Whitmire tells News Channel 32 in Toccoa state troopers were helping police and drug agents when a foot chase ensued. One of the suspects got to his car, Whitmire said, and tried to run over one of the troopers. That officer fired into the vehicle, striking the driver.
Chief Whitmire described him as "stable" as he was taken from the scene to a hospital.
Last week, in the parking lot of a Gainesville convenience store, a drug agent was seriously injured when he was allegedly struck by a car driven by a man he was trying to arrest. The officer fired into the vehicle but did not hit the driver who fled the scene only to be arrested a short time later.
