Hall mercury recycling project scheduled

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - A mercury collection project begins in Hall County Saturday.

It is one of "30-or-so" around the state, according to Rick Foote, natural resources coordinator for Hall County. Foote says the goal is to get items - such as thermometers and thermostats containing the poisonous metal out of as many homes as possible.

Foote says the mercury will be recycled to keep it out of landfills where it can contaminate the soil and water sources.

One non-mercury thermometer will be given per household in exchange for mercury thermometers taken to the county recycling center on Chestnut Street.

After the kick-off on Saturday, mercury will be collected at the recycling center each weekday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. through June 26.
