Lakeview team places 10th in Odyssey of the Mind finals

GAINESVILLE - The Lakeview Academy Odyssey of the Mind team, "Balancing Act," placed 10th recently in its division in the world finals at the University of Maryland.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college.

This spring, the Lakeview Academy team won region and state competition enabling them to compete in the World Finals. Teams came from nearly every state and from other countries, including Belarus, Canada, China, El Salvador, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Japan, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Poland, Singapore, Slovakia and Uzbekistan.

"Balancing Act" built a wooden structure out of balsa wood that held 545 pounds of weight without collapsing. The Chinese team prevailed by creating a structure that held over 600 pounds.

The Lakeview Academy team consists of 4th and 5th grade students and is coached by volunteer parents. Members include Natalie Zink, Cody Paradis, Alex Doty, Jamie Nixon, Mini Schulte, Alex Mitchell, and Danielle Garcia. The parent coaches are Lona Zink and Suzanne Doty.
