GAINESVILLE - The president of the newly-organized Marina Operators of Lake Lanier says business is bouncing back now that the prolonged drought is over.
Kirby Cae Scheimann of Aqualand Marina, however, said the drought - which lasted about five years - presented a real challenge for the marinas.
"I give the corps of engineers a ton of credit, especially for a couple of things," Sheimann said, "being that they worked with us (by keeping) us out ahead of the curve on where the lake level was going...and they allowed us the opportunity to do the relocating of docks."
Scheimann said the marina operators themselves cooperated with each other by allowing competitors to use space they were not using if another operator had boats that could not been taken care of because the water level was too low.
Scheimann also said boating activity on Lanier since the drought ended has been "very, very good" despite a rainy spring and early summer.
"The activity on the lake has been spectacular," he said. "A lot of the experienced boaters who have been laying back for several years are now back in and seeming to enjoy it."
Scheimann said its hard to complain about the recent rains even though it has definitely hurt business some.
He adds that seven of ten marinas on the lake are now members of the marina organization he heads.
