GAINESVILLE - Gainesville Police are asking area business operators to carefully inspect cash they exchange and to invest in counterfeit detection pens.
According to Gainesville Police Sergeant Carol Martin, the department has seen an increase in counterfeit bills in recent weeks.
As far as how to detect them, Martin said, "some of them are a little bit harder than other ones, but some, if you'll flip them over where they've glued the papers together they're not evenly lined up." She said the counterfeit detection pen is a good bet.
Martin said police are getting counterfeit reports about every second or third day. She says the denominations range from 20 to 100 dollars. Police believe the funny money is being made with a home computer and scanner.
Martin said anyone with information about the fake bills being passed in Gainesville should call police or the United State Secret Service.
