As police continue to look for a suspect, the Athens-Clarke County coroner has released the name of the pedestrian struck and killed by a car on an Athens sidewalk last week.

Sonny Wilson on Sunday said the man who was killed was Stephen James Pugh, 66, who was part of the Athens homeless community. Wilson told the Athens Banner-Herald Pugh had lived in Athens for about 20 years. He said he had tried to reach Pugh's next-of-kin with no success.

Pugh was killed on Wednesday, Dec. 22 as he was walking on the sidewalk on North Avenue near Strickland Avenue. The fatal collision happened around 3:45 p.m.

At the time, Athens-Clarke County police identified the suspect in Pugh's death as Amanda Gerrett, 31, of Athens. They have secured warrants for her arrest on charges of vehicular homicide in the first degree, felony hit-and-run and failure to maintain lane.

The newspaper report said anyone who has information on Gerrett’s whereabouts is asked to contact Officer Joe Lewis at 762-400-7169 or [email protected].
