A Gainesville man was arrested Sunday in connection with a hit-and-run crash in Hall County Saturday that left five people with injuries.

B.J. Williams, public information officer with the Hall County Sheriff's Office, said the wreck happened at about 9 p.m. Saturday on U.S. 129 at Smallwood Road.

An initial investigation found that Jose Luiz Muniz, 19, was reportedly driving south on U.S. 129 in a BMW car when he struck a Honda Odyssey minivan that was turning left from Smallwood Road onto U.S. 129.

Five people in the minivan, including three teenagers, were injured. Two of the teens were seriously injured while a third sustained critical injuries and was taken to Scottish Rite hospital. The two adults in the vehicle were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Williams said Muniz reportedly got out of his car right after the accident and fled from the scene on foot.  Muniz was later arrested on Sunday afternoon.

Muniz was charged with five counts of serious injury by vehicle, three counts of second-degree cruelty to children, reckless driving, failure to stop at the scene of an accident and leaving the scene of an accident.

The crash remained under investigation as of Monday morning.
