Week 3 notebook: Early area stat leaders, region powers, and spinning a Webb in Lumpkin

By Jeff Hart Sports Reporter

There was much anticipation surrounding East Hall senior quarterback Jamarcus Harrison coming into the 2025 campaign. Despite a season with over 2,800 total yards and 30 combined touchdowns in 2024, many felt he had not come even close to his full potential.

So far, Harrison is proving his admirers correct. In Class 3A, Harrison is 7th in passing with 357 yards (5 TD, 2 INT) and 6th in rushing with 260 yards and 3 TDs in the first two games. He is the only northeast Georgia area player in the top 10 in their respective classifications in both categories after the first two weeks.

Here’s a look at the other area players in the top 10 in their classifications after Week 2:

In Class 6A, North Forsyth's Cash Martin is 5th in receiving yards with 176 on 7 catches with 1 TD.

In Class 5A, Jackson County's Daylan Maxwell is 6th in rushing with 233 yards and 1 TD. Habersham Central's Paris Wilbanks is 7th in passing with 358 yards (2 TD, 1 INT). On the defensive side in Class 5A, Jackson County has three players in the top 10 in tackles after just two games. Tyler Mobbs is 2nd with 30 total tackles. Noah Bade is fifth with 25 tackles and 2 TFL and 2 sacks. Caylor Phillips is 9th with 21 tackles and 5 TFL. Habersham Central's CJ Davis is 7th with 22 tackles, 4 TFL, and 1 sack.

In Class 4A, Dalton's Caine Woods leads the class with 497 yards (7 TD, 2 INT) with East Forsyth's Chase Rhoads in 2nd just 39 yards behind with 458 yards (1 TD, 1 INT). Flowery Branch's Brett Sturm is 10th in passing in 4A with 305 yards (2 TD, 0 INT).

Harrison's teammate Chasen Jones is 10th in receiving in Class 3A with 157 yards on 6 catches with 1 TD. On the defensive side, East Hall's Elijah Buffington and Walt Jarrett lead Class 3A in tackles with 36 and 34, respectively. Jefferson's Max Brown, a Clemson commit, is fourth with 29 tackles, including 10 TFLs, which leads the classification in that category so far.

Rabun County's Ty Truelove, healthy once again, is 7th in Class A D1 with 377 yards and 2 TD passes. His teammate Reid Giles is 8th in receiving with 161 yards on 11 receptions. On the defensive side in Class A D1, Commerce's Shamar Myles is 6th in tackles with 20, including 2 TFL.

REGIONAL POWERS?!

Two northeast Georgia area regions lead their respective classifications in the GHSA in non-region winning percentage after the first two weeks of the season. Regions 8-3A and 8-2A are proving to be difficult for everyone, with Region 7-2A right behind.

Paced by 2024 state runner-up Jefferson (2-0) and quarterfinalist Cherokee Bluff (2-0) Region 8-3A is setting the early pace with a 9-3 record (.750). Every team in the region is .500 or better with Monroe Area also 2-0 to start. The region went 20-9 vs. non-region foes last year and it doesn’t look like much is slowing them down so far in 2025.

Region 8-2A was the best in the classification last season vs. non-region opponents with an 18-12 record (.600) and so far is torching everyone else with a 10-2 mark (.833), easily the best in Class 2A to this point. East Jackson, Franklin County, Prince Avenue, and Hebron Christian all are 2-0 after the first two weeks.

Second-best in Class 2A so far is Region 7-2A, which has Union County. The region as a whole is 10-5 (.667), with four of those losses coming to higher class teams. The Panthers (0-1) are the only team in the nine-team region that does not have a win but they have played just one game.

GETTING CAUGHT IN A WEBB IN LUMPKIN!

Heath Webb has transformed the Indians into a consistent winner in his three-plus seasons. He is already tied for second all-time in wins in program history with 27 (27-9, .750%) with current Cherokee Bluff head coach Tommy Jones (27-43 in 7 seasons, 2006 - 2012). And right now he has the highest winning percentage in program history. Don Thompkins (1967 & 1969) went 14-9 in those two seasons (.738%).

He could become the program's all-time winningest coach this season. George Hoblitzell went 31-33 in six seasons (2000-05)

But the Indians also are most dangerous following a loss. They are a perfect 5-0 under Webb coming off a loss. They take on Hart County on Friday on the road.

The Indians lost 31-21 to Cherokee Bluff two weeks ago and had a bye week last week to work out the kinks.

Just sayin'!
