At the halfway point of the non-region portion of the season for northeast Georgia area teams, how are the regions that house those teams in the Georgia High School Association doing based on the rest of the state?
AccessWDUN and Friday Game Night were wondering the same thing and so we took a quick look.
CLASS 6A
Region 8-6A with Buford is just 5-6 overall so far, with the Wolves responsible for two of those wins. The rest of the region is just 3-6 to this point. Out of the eight regions, 8-6A is fourth (.455) in winning percentage.
The eight-team Region 6-6A is 6-9 overall (.400, fifth in Class 6A) and North Forsyth (2-0) has two of those. That was probably unexpected at this point coming into the season. The four playoff teams from last season -- North Atlanta, Lambert, West Forsyth, and Denmark -- are a collective 3-5 so far in the early going.
CLASS 5A
Region 8-5A, which has Jackson County (1-1) and Habersham Central (1-1), is just 5-9 but that is still good for fifth in the classification overall. Five teams are 1-1 with Alcovy and Loganville sitting at 0-2. This could be one of the more competitive regions overall once they get to region play. But so far, someone will need to take up the mantle after the region got swept out of the playoffs in the first round last year.
Region 7-5A with Gainesville (2-0) is 6-6 overall but even defending state champion Milton has not been immune after losing to Buford in its opener two weeks ago. However, the region’s overall strength of schedule may be one of the toughest in the state with teams like Marietta, Buford, Walton, and Norcross scattered throughout the region schedules.
CLASS 4A
How tough is this classification? Region 8-4A, which houses Flowery Branch (1-1) and East Forsyth (2-0), has a .692 winning percentage (9-4) but that’s only good enough for 3rd-best in this classification after two weeks. Five of the region’s wins have come against higher classification teams. The five-team Region 6-4A is a blistering 9-1 so far with Region 2-4A at 7-3 overall to lead the way.
CLASS 3A
Paced by 2024 state runner-up Jefferson (2-0) and quarterfinalist Cherokee Bluff (2-0) Region 8-3A is setting the early pace with a 9-3 record (.750). Every team in the region is .500 or better with Monroe Area also 2-0 to start. The region went 20-9 vs. non-region foes last year and it doesn’t look like much is slowing them down so far in 2025.
Region 6-3A, which has most of the Hall County teams plus Dawson, Lumpkin, and White, is 6th overall in the classification at just 4-6 -- and Pickens has two of those wins. But only the Dragons (2-0) and GAC (1-1) have played two games as the rest of the region had either the first or second week off. Defending region champ North Hall (1-0) did not open until last week. But the region as a whole is ahead of last year’s pace when they went just 8-16 (.333) vs. non-region opponents in 2024.
CLASS 2A
Region 8-2A was the best in the classification last season vs. non-region opponents with an 18-12 record (.600) and so far is torching everyone else with a 10-2 mark, still the best in Class 2A to this point. East Jackson, Franklin County, Prince Avenue, and Hebron Christian all are 2-0 after the first two weeks.
Second-best in Class 2A so far is Region 7-2A, which has Union County. The region as a whole is 10-5 (.667), with four of those losses coming to higher class teams. The Panthers (0-1) are the only team in the nine-team region that does not have a win but they have played just one game.
CLASS A Division 1
Region 8-A D1, with Banks County, Commerce, and Rabun County, was 11-17 last year, the worst in the classification but perhaps also with the hardest non-region schedule combined. The region is just 4-9 after the first two weeks, with six losses against higher class teams. The shocking part is that Commerce, Elbert County, and Providence Christian, three playoff teams from last season, are 0-6 combined. Rabun County is the only team in the region to start 2-0 in 2025. However, Region 2-A D1 is at the bottom after two weeks with a 2-6 (.250) record.
