GLENVIEW, Ill. — After climbing to as high as the top 20 and sitting at 5-under par after 10 holes, things unraveled on the back nine for Spencer Ralston on Thursday in the opening round of the NV5 Invitational at The Glen Club.
The Gainesville native started strong, birdieing Nos. 4, 5, and 6 and then chipping in for an eagle on the Par 4 10th to get to 5-under and a tie for 17th. But he followed with a bogey on the Par 3 11th.
Ralston was still well within striking distance at 4-under and recorded four consecutive pars heading to the 16th. An errant tee shot resulted in a two-stroke penalty on the way to a triple-bogey 7 and then closed out the round with a bogey on the Par 5 18th to finish at even par.
He will tee off at 8:52 a.m. on Friday sitting nine shots off the lead. However, several players have yet to finish their opening round and the projected cut line could be as high as 4-under when the second round begins.
