Slight risk for severe weather conditions in north Georgia Thursday evening and late night

By Steve Winslow Anchor/Reporter

The National Weather Service's (NWS) Peachtree City/Atlanta Decision Support Services branch is issuing a potential for severe weather conditions to the areas north of Atlanta, and into much of northern Georgia and parts of Tennessee and North Carolina for Thursday evening and late night hours.

While Thursday's forecast in the northeast area for Georgia calls for more sunshine during the day, the slight risk of severe weather mentioned by the NWS would likely affect conditions during the evening commute, heading into nightfall. The NWS's press release early Thursday morning indicates, "The SPC has expanded our Slight Risk (2 out of 5) for severe weather this (THursday) afternoon for northern Georgia. The confidence in the severe weather potential has increased for areas along and north of I-20/85. Weather will continue to be unsettled for the rest of the week, but no significant changes from our last email have been made to Friday's severe weather forecast at this time."

A Slight (2 out of 5) to Marginal Risk (1 out of 5) for severe thunderstorms is forecast for the night hours, which the NWS says could create the potential for the following areas north of Interstates 20 and 85:

  • Damaging Winds up to 60 MPH
  • Hail up to a quarter of an inch
