Banks County Fire units extinguished a fire caused by improper cooking at the Comfort Suites off of Hwy 441 in the Banks Crossing area on Friday, Mar. 21.
Steve Nichols with Banks County Fire and Emergency Services said units responded to the scene at around 10:28 p.m. where they found smoke on the fourth floor.
They found the fire in an occupant’s room caused by “discarded cooking material” in a trashcan.
The fire was put out and smoke was removed from the motel.
Nichols said the motel was evacuated but occupants were allowed to return to their rooms after the nearly two-hour operation.
No injuries were reported, and the fire's cause was listed as accidental and improper cooking.
The Jackson County Correctional Institute Fire Department assisted in the operation.
