After a week of weather disruptions, not much changed as far as region standings in the Georgia High School Association involving northeast Georgia-area teams.
Four teams still lead their respective regions; one other moved into first place over the weekend, and another sits just one-half game behind first place, heading into this week’s action. Two key region games will be held on Monday as make-up dates for last week, while a full slate of games is set for Tuesday and Friday.
That definitely could, and should, change, as all 17 games scheduled for Monday and Tuesday involve region matchups.
Buford continues to lead in Region 8-6A. The 10th-ranked Lady Wolves (17-2, 7-1 Region 8-6A) maintained their one-game over Mill Creek (12-5, 6-2 Region 8-6A). On Monday, the Lady Wolves will play host to a surging Central Gwinnett squad (15-5, 6-3 Region 8-6A), which has won two straight and 9 of its last 11. They will play host to Mill Creek on Tuesday with a chance to nearly seal the regular season title.
Also in Class 6A, No. 2-ranked North Forsyth (22-0, 11-0 Region 6-6A) opened up a 2-game lead over Lambert (15-6, 9-2 Region 6-6A) with a win over the Lady Longhorns last week. The Lady Raiders will travel to third-place South Forsyth (16-4, 7-3 Region 6-6A) on Tuesday.
Jackson County still leads Region 8-5A despite suffering its first region loss last week. The lead has shrunk to just one-half game over Loganville (8-12, 6-1 Region 8-5A). The Lady Panthers (14-7, 7-1 Region 8-5A) head to struggling Winder-Barrow (7-14, 1-7 Region 8-5A) on Tuesday.
Region 8-3A continues to beat a gauntlet for every team in the region. However, Class 3A No. 2-ranked Jefferson (16-4, 6-0-0 Region 8-3A) is still the only undefeated team left in the region and has won every region game by double-digits. On Tuesday, the Lady Dragons will play host to second-place Oconee County (16-5, 5-1 Region 8-3A), looking to keep the lead outright. No. 6 Cherokee Bluff (15-6, 4-2 Region 8-3A) heads to West Hall (4-16, 0-6 Region 8-3A) on Tuesday, and East Hall (10-9, 2-4 Region 8-3A) entertains Monroe Area (7-13, 1-5 Region 8-3A).
Region 6-3A has become a two-team race between Class 3A No. 1-ranked Pickens (18-2, 9-1 Region 6-3A) and fifth-ranked White County (16-4, 8-1 Region 6-3A). The Lady Warriors have a challenging week playing host to a surging 18th-ranked Dawson County (13-7, 6-3 Region 6-3A), who handed Pickens its only region loss, on Tuesday and then traveling to No. 10 Chestatee (14-6, 6-3 Region 6-3A) on Wednesday.
If White County can get through that, it could set up a first-place showdown with Pickens in Jasper on Friday. Chestatee could also move up the standings this week with region games against Johnson, White County, and Dawson County on Friday.
In Region 8-A Division 1, 10th-ranked Banks County (15-5, 8-1 Region 8-A D1) moved a half-game ahead of No. 2 Elbert County (18-1, 7-1 Region 8-A D1) in the region standings after a pair of dominating wins over the weekend. The Lady Leopards have won 12 straight, including a win over Elbert County last week. Those two teams split their two regular-season meetings.
