What's Happening This Weekend: First weekend of August

While many kids are now back in school, some still have one more weekend to enjoy their summer break! There will be plenty to do on this first weekend of August!

CONCERTS:

Event Name: First Friday Concert Downtown Gainesville
Event Date & Time: Friday, August 2, 5 – 10 p.m.
Event Location: Downtown Square, 100 Spring St., Gainesville
Event Details: Get ready for a night of fun, dancing and enjoying local talent at this free community event. Gary Carter Band will kick off the event and will be followed by Fly Betty Band. Bring your blanket or chair. 

Event Name: First Friday Concert in Dahlonega
Event Date & Time: Friday, August 2, 6:30 p.m.- 8:30
Event Location: Hancock Park, Dahlonega
Event Details: Free live music for the whole community, games, local food and food trucks. This month, come rock out with Radford Windham & Step Back Cadillac. Bring a blanket, lawn chair and enjoy listening to some music off the historic Dahlonega square.

Event Name: Listen to Her Heart, Tom Petty Tribute
Event Date & Time: Friday, August 2, 7:30 – 10 p.m.
Event Location: Boot Barn Hall, Gainesville
Event Details: This tribute band Is dedicated to honoring Tom Petty and his iconic music. You’ll be able to sing to your favorites like, “Free Fallin” and “American Girl.” Tickets for ages 14+ at www.bootbarnhallga.com.

Event Name: Chi-Town Transit Authority, Music of Chicago
Event Date & Time: Saturday, August 3, 7:30 – 10 p.m. 
Event Location: Boot Barn Hall, Gainesville
Event Details: Enjoy this Chicago tribute band which recreates the songs and sounds of your from this iconic group. This group has been named by Beat Atlanta Magazine as, “the best tribute band out there.” Get tickets at www.bootbarnhallga.com for ages 14+.

Event Name: Skynfolks, Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Band
Event Date & Time: Friday, August 2, 8 - 10 p.m.
Event Location: Lou Sobh Amphitheater, Cumming
Event Details: The Cumming City Center will come alive with the rock music as this group has a commitment to reproduce the music of Lynyrd Skynyrd as accurately as possible. This is a free concert. Just bring your chairs, blankets and friendly dogs on a leash.

Event Name: Elevation, A Tribute to U2
Event Date & Time: Saturday, August 3, 8 – 10 p.m. 
Event Location: Lou Sobh Amphitheater, Cumming
Event Details: Free admission and free parking to this concert. Just bring a blanket or chairs and enjoy your favorite U2 songs. Elevation focuses on capturing the energy, spirit and music of U2. 

FESTIVALS & SPECIAL EVENTS: 

Event Name: Barrow County Pep Rally
Event Date & Time: Friday, August 2, 6 – 9 p.m.
Event Location: Jug Tavern Park, 139 E. Athens St., Winder
Event Details: Cheer on the back-to-school season as Barrow County Schools showcases bands, cheerleaders and other performers. You might even bump into Freddie Falcon, Gwinnett Stripers, Chopper or even a UGA mascot. 

Event Name: Gala of the Royal Horses
Event Date & Time: Saturday, August 3, 7 p.m.
Event Location: Chicopee Woods Agricultural Center, 1855 Calvary Church Rd., Gainesville
Event Details: This event is dedicated to showing off the amazing beauty and maneuvers these horses are capable of, including the stunning maneuvers once used on the battlefield, as well as “Roman Riding.” See one rider standing atop a pair of horses with one foot on each horse. Different skills of horses and riders will be displayed. Tickets are available at the door one hour before showtime. For details, call 361-332-6305. 

Event Name: National Play Outside Day
Event Date & Time: Saturday, August 3, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. 
Event Location: Elachee Nature Science Center, Gainesville
Event Details: Join us for family-friendly water play and games to get you moving outdoors. Drop in/out. This is included in the cost of entrance admission. 

Event Name: Free Entrance to All National Parks
Event Date & Time: Sunday, August 4, All Day
Event Location: National Parks Located in Savannah, Atlanta, Macon, Kennesaw & More
Event Details: There are six days in the calendar year where entrance to all national parks are free! PRODUCTIONS: 

Event Name: The Wizard of Oz
Event Date & Time: Friday, August 2 – Sunday, August 18, Various Times
Event Location: Holly Theater, Dahlonega
Event Details: We’re off to see the wizard! It’s opening wicked of the Holly Theater’s adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s beloved tale. This is rated G and a production the whole family can enjoy. Get your tickets at www.hollytheater.com
