Officials with the city of Winder officially cut the ribbon on their newest park Saturday in the city's downtown area.
The ceremony was to commemorate the opening of Winder Legacy Park at the corner of Bellview Street and Midland Avenue. Chris Maddox, fundraising co-chair for the Barrow Community Foundation, called the park's construction a major success for the area.
“This park is one of the best examples of a public-private-partnership I’ve ever seen,” Maddox said in a release prior to the park's opening Friday. “The City’s contribution to the park’s infrastructure, the County’s donation, and the support from private citizens all came together to create this one-of-a-kind park for our community.”
The park cost $5 million to construct and was funded in part by several private entities, including Northeast Georgia Health System, Akin Ford, Harrison Poultry and Republic Services. The city of Winder, Barrow County's government and the Barrow County School System contributed public funds to the project.
Winder City Engineer Gerard Brewer said the city contributed $1.1 million to infrastructure surrounding the park, including lighting, park benches and future plans for a culvert underneath Midland Avenue.
