Girls basketball: Banks County's Shedd hired as new White County coach

By Jeff Hart Sports Reporter

CLEVELAND, Ga. — White County did not have to look far for its next girls basketball coach.

Steve Shedd, who led the Banks County girls to the 2023 Class 2A state championship game, was approved on Tuesday night as the newest Lady Warriors head coach following the White County Board of Education's vote of approval.

Shedd spent the past eight seasons in Homer, leading the Lady Leopards to three Elite 8 appearances overall and the program's first state title game since 1965. Banks County finished 25-5 in 2023-24, winning its second straight Region 8-2A title and advancing to the Elite 8 before falling to eventual state runner-up Josey. The Lady Leopards went 53-9 over the past two seasons.

White County, playing in the uber-tough Region 7-3A the past two seasons, finished fourth with a 22-9 overall record this past season but made a run to its first Elite 8 since 1984 in Class 3A under first-year coach Zuquinnta Moss.

Shedd will be the Lady Warriors' third coach in as many seasons, but he also inherits a roster that had 12 underclassmen, including five freshmen and three sophomores.
