By Austin Eller News Director

An Oakwood man was shot and is in critical condition after an incident Saturday involving police near a Roswell restaurant.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified that man as Martin Candelas Ponce, 34, of Oakwood.

A preliminary investigation by the GBI showed the Roswell 911 Center received several calls from staff and patrons at Mazzy's Sports Bar & Grill on Alpharetta Highway at about 1:15 a.m. Saturday about an unruly patron who was armed with a gun.

Officers arrived at the business and found that man, Ponce, sitting at the bar with a handgun. Officers gave the man verbal commands to drop the weapon, but he instead raised the firearm. An officer then shot Ponce.

Officers rendered aid to Ponce until he was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He remained there as of Monday in critical condition.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the Fulton County District Attorney's Office for review.
