Boys basketball playoffs: Lumpkin gets 1st postseason win since 2016; Towns advances, NHall falls

ROSSVILLE, Ga. — Lumpkin County won its first postseason game since 2016 on Wednesday, rolling past Ridgeland 57-37 on the road in the opening round of the Class 3A playoffs.

The Indians (10-17) led 23-16 at the half, paced by Cal Faulkner’s 18 points in the first 16 minutes.

Lumpkin County poured it on in the second half, outscoring the Panthers (10-17) 34-21 in the second half.

Faulkner finished with 25 points to pace the Indians. TJ Gaddis added 14 for Lumpkin County.

John Hill led Ridgeland with 12 points.

Lumpkin's win was part of the Region 7-3A sweep of Region 6-3A on the night.

Next up for the Indians is the Sandy Creek/Stephens County winner on Saturday.


TOWNS COUNTY 54,
TWIGGS COUNTY 48

The Indians overcame an 11-point deficit in the second half to knock off the Region 5-A Division champion Cobras on the road in the first round of the Class A D1 playoffs.

Towns County got a quick start and would take a 16-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. However, Twiggs County exploded in the second quarter, draining five 3-pointers and turned an eight-point deficit into a 31-28 halftime lead.

The Cobras continued their hot shooting to start the third quarter, building an 11-point lead at one point. But Towns County went to a full-court press and used several Twiggs County turnovers to cut the deficit to 43-36  to start the fourth quarter. 

The Indians outscored Twiggs 18-5 in the final period to pull out the victory.

Zane Floyd led Towns County with 16 points. Tanner Cunningham had 14 points, Gage Rogers had 9, and Connor Chastain had 8 points for the Indians.

Towns County will go on to face the winner of Manchester and Mount Zion in the Sweet 16 on Saturday.


MCDONOUGH 84,
NORTH HALL 53

The Trojans season came to an end on Wednesday in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.

It was a rough first half for North Hall, who managed just 12 total points, while McDonough ran out to a 25-7 lead after the first quarter and led 49-12 at halftime.

Matt Ray paced the Trojans with 16 points. Cole Hulsey added 9 for North Hall.

Zion Greene led McDonough with 25 points, 18 in the first half.
