The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has launched an investigation into a Saturday evening officer-involved shooting in Clayton.

The GBI said the incident happened at about 11:15 p.m. on Highway 76 at Meadow Stream Lane. Clayton Police Department officers and Rabun County Sheriff’s deputies were conducting a traffic safety checkpoint when the suspect, Lars Anton Rudow, 51, of Watkinsville, stopped his car before reaching the checkpoint. A Clayton Police Officer approached Rudow's car, but he accelerated and allegedly grazed the officer in the leg. That officer was not injured.

Rudow then drove towards other officers at the checkpoint and one shot at his car. Authorities chased Rudow for less than a mile before he crashed off the road.

Rudow was arrested and charged with DUI Refusal and five counts of aggravated assault on a Police Officer.

The GBI said they will conduct an independent investigation into the incident and will turn it over to the Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review once complete.

GBI officials said no one was injured during the incident.
