Officer involved shooting reported in Commerce

By Steve Winslow Anchor/Reporter

The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Commerce from Monday night.

A GBI release says the City of Commerce Police Department asked them to conduct an independent investigation over one man being shot and injured.

The preliminary information indicates that about 5:15 p.m., officers received a 911 call about a domestic incident near the 5700 block of Mt. Olive Road, in Commerce.

When officers arrived, a man was swinging a machete type weapon around.

Officers gave verbal commands for him to put the weapon down and when he refused, officers then fired their weapons and hit the man.

Officers rendered aid, and the man was later taken to a Gainesville hospital.

The victim's condition is not know as of last report, and no officers were injured.

This is the 51st officer involved shooting the GBI has been requested to investigate in 2023.
