Habersham County E-911 announces program to aid response to those with special needs

By Austin Eller News Director

Habersham County E-911 announced this week the launch of the Logan's Law database, which will aid first responders when responding to a home with residents who may have special needs.

According to a press release from the agency, the database was created in partnership with the Georgia Emergency Communications Authority.

The voluntary program allows Habersham County residents to register a family member who may have a special need into the database by filling out the Special Concerns Information Sheet and returning it to the 911 center.

Beth Alewine, records manager for Habersham County E-911, said the database can help first responders more appropriately respond to calls.

"It helps them identify any triggers that may overwhelm the individual," Alewine said. "For example, if someone is triggered by loud noises, lights and sirens may not be the best option when we are going to assist them."

Alewine said registering the individual in the database also helps first responders know what to look for and who to look for.

"We do keep this form on file locally for three years, or until the information is no longer valid if it's before those three years," Alewine said.

Residents can obtain a copy of the sheet or get more information by calling the Habersham County dispatch center at (706) 778-3911 or email Alewine at [email protected], assistant director Melanie Bellinger at [email protected] or Director Lynn Smith at [email protected].
