Two injured after crash near Soquee River

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

Two people were injured after their vehicle went down a steep embankment near the Soquee River in Habersham County Tuesday.

Habersham County EMS Spokesman Rob Moore said crews were called to the scene on Habersham Mills Road near Demorest just after 2:00 p.m.

"It had probably about 60 to 65 feet off the road through thick undergrowth and landed just short of the Soquee River at the base of Habersham Mills Dam," Moore said.

Moore said crews made it down the embankment and found two people trapped inside the vehicle and cut the top off the vehicle to reach them. They then set up a rope system to pull the victims back up the hill.

"We had about an eight-person crew at the top who actually was doing the hauling, pulling the rope to bring the team out with the victims, so it was a really unusual rescue," Moore said. "We're thankful that it wasn't worse than it was and we're thankful that the vehicle didn't end up in the river itself."

Moore said both victims were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville with what he said were non-life-threatening injuries.

Habersham Mills Road was shut down at the scene for several hours.
