By Austin Eller News Director

Two people were killed Wednesday afternoon in a plane crash in Oconee County near Watkinsville.

The Federal Aviation Administration said in a release the single-engine Cessna 177B crashed in a field around 2:30 p.m. A social media post from the Oconee County Sheriff's Office said the crash happened just off Government Station Road in Oconee County.

An accident report from the FAA shows two people died in the crash, including one member of the flight crew and a passenger in the plane.

The names of those involved have not been released as authorities attempt to contact the victims' next of kin.

A report from the flight tracking website, FlightAware, shows the plane took off from Leesburg International Airport in Leesburg Florida at about 11:43 a.m. and was heading toward the Barrow County Airport at the time of the crash.

No information has been released regarding what led to the crash.

The sheriff's office asks those in the area of Stonebridge Parkway and Latham Drive to watch out for debris that may be connected to the plane crash. If you spot debris, do not move it and call the Oconee County Sheriff's Office at (706) 769-5665.

The National Transportation Safety Board and FAA are investigating. The NTSB said an NTSB investigator was expected to arrive on the scene Thursday morning.
