Lawrenceville’s Collins Hill Extension will soon be renamed following a unanimous vote from the city council.
According to a press release, the name of the road will officially change on the City Plat. Collins Hill Extension in the section of the road between Tanner Street and Hurricane Shoals Road to recognize the city’s connection to the Georgia Gwinnett College Campus. The 2.2-mile mobility connection was formerly referred to as the College Corridor.
Dr. Jann Joseph, President of Georgia Gwinnett College, selected the name “Grizzly Parkway.”
“We are proud of our association [with Georgia Gwinnett College], and it would be my privilege to put forward the consideration of that name, ” Councilman Glenn Martin During said.
The City of Lawrenceville said it has worked with Georgia Gwinnett College to build a strong relationship since its 2006 opening as the first four-year college founded in more than 100 years and the first four-year public college created in the U.S. in the 21st century. Georgia Gwinnett College is a member of the University System of Georgia. The City of Lawrenceville is a strong supporter of GGC Athletics. Nicknamed “The Grizzlies,” the GGC mascot is used for athletics and other campus purposes.
“The Georgia Gwinnett College community is extremely pleased about the naming of ‘Grizzly Parkway’ for the road that connects our campus to downtown Lawrenceville,” GGC President Dr. Jann Joseph said. “Grizzly Parkway strengthens the very important relationship we have with our wonderful home city. It serves as an open invitation for intentional lifestyles within our community and engagement between the college and downtown. Grizzly Parkway currently features bike lanes, sidewalks, pop-out parks, and multi-use trails all along the way with much more to come in the future.”
