Student at southern Gwinnett elementary school arrested after reportedly firing firearm into toilet

By Will Daughtry News Reporter

A student has been arrested and will face charges after allegedly bringing a gun to a southern Gwinnett County school and firing it into a toilet.

According to Gwinnett County Public Schools’ (GCPS’) Director of Community and Media Relations Bernard Watson, the incident happened early Thursday morning before school started at Meadowcreek Elementary School.

Officials said no one was in the bathroom and no one got hurt.

Initially, administrations received reports of a toilet in a restroom being broken. The student they brought into question admitted to damaging it and received disciplinary consequences.

It was Friday that the new information came to light, with parents and students reporting that the same student brought a firearm to school, threatening to shoot the toilet.

Police investigated, confirming the student had taken a gun from home, brought it to school, and discharged it in a toilet before classes began.

The student has been arrested and will face criminal charges while police are also investigating if the student’s parents will face charges

“We’ll be collaborating with the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office if criminal charges will be forthcoming,” GCPS Chief of Police Tony Lockhart said. “As a responsible gun owner, you need to make sure your weapon is secure and safe and just to take it another step, any family members make sure that there’s nothing in your chi;d’s backpack that shouldn’t be there prior to them leaving for school.”

Watson said they are taking the threat very seriously, and the investigation is ongoing.

“To our families, please know that we take any threat to our safety very seriously,” Watson said.
