Two dead after fire at Lula residence

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

Two men were found dead inside a residential fire in the Lula area Friday night.

Banks County Fire and Emergency Services officials said in a release that the fire happened on Georgia 51 South near Garrison Shoals Road. When crews arrived around 10:30 p.m. they found half the structure engulfed in flames.

Firefighters were told that people were still inside the structure, so they made their way in while fighting the blaze and found the two men dead. The victims' names have not been released, but authorities said both were in their mid-30's.

A firefighter on scene also had to be taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville for heat-related illness and a shoulder injury. He was later released and sent home.

The fire was eventually put out with units staying on the scene as late as 1:15 Saturday morning. The Banks County Sheriff's Office and State Fire Marshal's Office are investigating the cause of the fire.
