MT. AIRY, Ga. — After a slow start, the Gainesville girls basketball team went on a 10-0 spurt to take control and eventually roll to a 59-30 win over Apalachee at Habersham Central High School.
The Lady Red Elephants forced Apalachee to turn it over 21 times in the first half and outscored the Lady Wildcats s 24 -17
Mattie White, who had 14 points and 12 rebounds, nine offensive boards, was big in Big Red's 17-5 run that blew open the game in the second quarter, 34-15.
KeKe Jones was also instrumental in the big first half, scoring 11 points, five in the second quarter.
Kedria Young led the Lady Red Elephants with 18 points while ripping down 10 rebounds, scored 10 straight points to open the third quarter, and finished with 13 in the quarter to push Gainesville ahead, 56-26, at the end of the third quarter.
Gainesville outrebounded Apalachee 49-37.
Jyrah Hugley led Apalachee with 12 points.
Gainesville (21-3, Region 8-6A No. 3 seed) will play No. 2 seed Habersham Central on Thursday at Habersham Central. Tip is 7 p.m.
