Gainesville Farmers Market permanently closed following relocation

The Gainesville Farmers Market has ended its run following the 2022 decision to relocate the market to Roosevelt Square for its 2023 season.

“Sadly, the Gainesville Farmers Market is no more. The City Council voted us off the Historic Downtown Square and the alternate site chosen for us is not conducive to running a successful market. Thanks to all our customers and to the farmers and vendors that supported the market for 14 (mostly) wonderful years,” the market shared in a Facebook post Thursday.

The Gainesville Farmers Market has been located on the Historic Downtown Square since its inception in 2009. The original location was chosen to follow suit with a 200-year-old tradition of when mule carts were brought to the square by farmers to sell produce and crafts to city people, Market Manager Steven Thomas said in an interview with AccessWDUN in Aug. 2022.

The market was set to be moved to Roosevelt Square, a grassy park-like setting situated at the center of Gainesville’s downtown government complex, beginning the market’s 2023 season.

Neither Thomas nor city officials could be reached for comment following the market’s Facebook post.
