Basketball: Bluff, Chestatee, Gainesville, Lanier headline radio lineup

By Bo Wilson Sports Editor

Before you know it, the regular season will be history for Northeast Georgia's basketball teams.

The season hits its final week of action, which means much tension and excitement await.

Cherokee Bluff travels to Chestatee for a Region 8-4A North monster doubleheader tonight. You can hear the action live on AM 550 and FM 102.9 WDUN.

The Bluff girls are seeking their first win over Chestatee this season. The Lady War Eagles (17-6. 7-2 Region 8-4A North) have beaten Bluff twice, a 63-62 win in Lanierland and a 57-46 win on Jan. 10 -- only the latest matchup counts in the region standings.

The Lady Bears (13-9, 5-4 Region 8-4A North) are one game out of the No. 3 seed behind East Forsyth. Chestatee is tied with North Hall for the top seed in the subregion. North Hall travels to East Forsyth tonight. The landscape of the North subregion could look different after tonight.

On the boys side, Cherokee Bluff (16-7, 8-1 Region 8-4A North) rolls into Chestatee (15-8, 8-1 Region 8-4A North) looking to take control of the subregion lead. However, Chestatee, which lost to Bluff on Jan. 10, 71-66, is also looking to take over the outright subregion lead with a win tonight.

In Gainesville, both boys and girls teams are looking to return to the winning track after falling to North Forsyth on Tuesday. They'll welcome Lanier at the Alumni Gym tonight. You can hear the action live on AM 1240 and FM 94.5 The Lake.

On the girls side, the Lady Red Elephants (18-3, 6-3 Region 8-6A) will look to sweep the season series with Lanier (14-8, 6-3 Region 8-6A) and take over third place in the standings. If North Forsyth knocks off Habersham Central at home tonight, the winner of the Gainesville-Lanier game will be tied with Habersham for the No. 2 seed.

The Gainesville boys (12-9, 5-4 Region 8-6A) come into tonight's battle with No. 3-ranked Lanier(18-4, 9-0 Region 8-6A) losing the last three out of four games, including an 11-point loss to North Forsyth on Tuesday. In the first meeting, Gainesville had the lead late but failed to finish in a 56-48 loss to the Longhorns. If Big Red can put together four quarters tonight, they'll give themselves a chance to win. If not, they'll stay mid-pack in the region standings.
