3 dead in apparent Athens murder-suicide

By Austin Eller News Director

Police in Athens-Clarke County have launched an investigation after three people were recently found dead in an apparent murder-suicide case.

According to a press release from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, police were dispatched at about 10:55 p.m. Friday to an aggravated assault call on Massey Lane.

Arriving officers found three victims at the scene, two of which had already died before authorities arrived.

An initial investigation from the agency indicated Juliana Navarnete-Moreno, 26, and Hugo Martinez-Cerritos, 20, arrived at the home on Massey Lane when Mangell Maivena, 31, approached their vehicle. Maivena was reportedly formerly in a relationship with Navarnete-Moreno. All three are from Athens.

A domestic dispute broke out between the parties which eventually escalated into gunfire. Maivena shot Navarnete-Moreno and Martinez-Cerritos, then took his own life with a firearm. Navarnete-Moreno was pronounced dead at the scene. Martinez-Cerritos was taken to a local hospital but died from his injuries on Sunday.

The agency is asking anyone with information about the incident to contact Det. Paul Johnson at (762) 400-7060 or by email at [email protected].
